Gambling Woods’ bid for a history-making 83rd PGA Tour title got away from a disappointing start as he battled to an opening-round 76 at the Zozo Championship.

Woods, seeking to defend his title after final year’s three-shot victory in The japanese, struggled to an opening-round 76 on the low-scoring day at Sherwood Country Club within California.

The former planet No 1 is a five-time champion at the venue, where he used to web host the Hero World Challenge, even though failed to replicate that success as he dropped 12 strokes behind the early direct.

Beginning on the back 9, Woods opened with a par yet had to play a shot left-handed on the par-five next after an errant tee shot finished behind the tree and with no clear photo.

Woods was required to lay up out of the thick tough and holed a 10-footer to obtain away with just a bogey, simply to double-bogey the par-five 13th right after laying up and then failing to obtain up and down from a greenside bunker.

The 15-time major champ undid some of the damage by holing a birdie from nearly ninety feet at the next, before bringing out his tee shot into drinking water at the par-five 16th on his method to another bogey.

Woods failed to transform a birdie opportunity from inside 10 feet at the first but found a shot from a similar distance on the par-five next, with the 44-year-old after that unable to get up and down to conserve par at the fourth.

Another loose tee shot in the par-three eighth saw Woods sign up another bogey to slip four more than for the day, before signing off the frustrating day by leaving the 15-foot birdie attempt at the 9th – his final hole — short of the target.
