Two-time FIFA Women’s Planet Cup™-winning assistant coach Tony Gustavsson has been named the new head trainer of Australia women’s national group.

Gustavsson’s contract operates until 2024 and he is set to be responsible for the Matildas for several important global competitions, including next year’s Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Football Competition, the AFC Women’s Asian Glass 2022 and the showpiece event, the particular Women’s World Cup on house soil.

The 47-year-old will be looking to improve upon the particular Matildas’ showing at France 2019, where they dropped out following the Round of 16, losing in order to Norway on penalties.

“I am extremely proud and pleased to have been appointed (Australia) head trainer, ” Gustavsson said. “I believe that my 21 years of coaching have got put me in the position to become ready for this.

“It feels as if I have come to a flash where this is what I have been waiting for – to lead the Matildas pertaining to four years and also at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia plus New Zealand in 2023.

“I have always stated that the Matildas have the potential to become one of the best teams in the world and that is a primary reason that I wanted to get on board using this job.
