Deta Hedman is a darting pioneer – instrumental in putting women’s darts on the map. Later this year, Hedman will become the 2nd oldest debutant in PDC World Championship history and you’d battle to find anyone that begrudges her this moment in the spotlight.
The Jamaican-born veteran has a remarkable résumé, having amassed significantly more than 200 titles during a career spanning over four decades, and now she’s preparing to etch her name to the history books once again following her success at the PDC Women’s Series.
Hedman displayed tremendous consistency across the four events and courtesy of her Event Two triumph on Saturday, she edged out Fallon Sherrock to join Lisa Ashton in qualifying for this year’s Alexandra Palace showpiece, where she will become the sixth woman to feature in the event.
It’s been a groundbreaking year for the women’s game – Sherrock making history by becoming the first woman to join up victory at the PDC World Championship, coupled with Ashton securing a Tour Card via Qualifying School – the first woman to do so.
However , Hedman is a trailblazer in her own right. Despite the exploits of her contemporaries, Hedman was the first woman in darting history to record a televised conquer a male opponent, toppling Aaron Turner at the 2005 UK Open.
The 60-year-old has broken down barriers since trying out the sport in the mid 80s, challenging the status quo in just a white, male-dominated environment, therefore it’s fitting that during Black History Month, she becomes the first black woman to qualify for the PDC Worlds.
There can be no denying Hedman’s legendary status, even though being such a figurehead can be a burden, which is why her self-effacing nature has been integral to her success.
“I never really consider that. I think that’s probably why I do so well because I don’t really focus on things like that, ” she told Sky Sports before the inaugural Women’s Series.

“I’ve grown up from the age of 14 in England, so I don’t really consider it being a black woman and fighting for this and that. I just set about my business. I just see my own self as a person playing darts since it is and enjoying it. ”
However , the events of 2020 have brutally exposed the issue of racism and having been subjected to such vulgarity, Hedman insists it’s still a particular prevalent stain on sport and in addition society.
“It’s also there even now, believe you just. It hasn’t gone away. When i don’t think it will ever go away associated with that’s how some people are, inch added Hedman, who recounts hacia disturbing incident in the Czech Republic a few years ago.
“That one was pretty dire. He said: ‘I didn’t know they instructed monkeys to throw darts’. It is impossible dress that up at all. That is certainly just racist. ”
Hedman also received a sickening racist tirade following defeat on 2019 BDO World Championship, on the contrary this simply strengthened her solution, which she admits wasn’t don’t forget to the case during the fledgling stages in her career.
“I dropped out of the sport for a few years but also took a back seat, simply to clear my head. I returned plainly and I think I returned a far more powerful person. ”
Hedman on encountering racism over darts…
Having been selected to represent Great britain in 1997, Hedman cited purpose commitments as the reason for stepping away from game, but the reality was different.
“There was one particular incident too many and I’d been made redundant from enjoyment. I just said to Olly [Croft, BDO founder who died in 2019] who is no longer with our value, I sent him an is a wonderful to say I’d lost enjoyment of this little game, I wouldn’t go to Australia to symbolize England with the way I was thought.
“I dropped out of your sport for a few years and took their back seat, just to clear me. I returned obviously and I think Document returned a stronger person. The other parts as they say is history! ”
There is certainly plenty of history everywhere Hedman is concerned. She began leading in the British Darts Organisation when 1987 and her breakthrough had an appearance in the 1990 Entire Masters final, a tournament she’d win four years later.
Fast forward three decades and as a consequence she’s still competing at the most level with an illustrious trophy life of the loan to boot, although the World Championship subject – the sport’s biggest honor – has thus far proven hard-to-find.

Despite watching 11 separate spells as globally No 1, Hedman has gave in three World Championship définitif over the last decade, so it’s ironic the good thing is PDC World Championship offers the lady’s the opportunity to fulfil her darting aims.
Longevity is usually a mighty barometer of quality and Hedman is in a league of her very own in that respect, which is made all the more belle by her gruelling work schedule and it she’s maintained for the last 25 years.
The two-time World Crush works four 13-hour night transfers per week at the Royal Mail then made the trip to the Barnsley Metrodome fresh from a 4am finish, but rather her insatiable passion for the football drives her on.
Nicknamed ‘The Heart of Darts’ due to her work with the cause that offers support to disabled teens, Hedman is also England Youth charge and concedes she is likely to wind up being involved in the game in some capacity.
“I think it’s finding the love and enjoyment that I still do right after i play and meeting up with some benefit friends, ” she continued.
“I’ll just see where ever it takes me. I will probably develop into involved in the game until I go down or when my memory falters me but I’m still supporting it. I have my moments! very well
The Women’s Line was a landmark event for Hedman personally, but it was also a party of the progress made in the ladies’ game during recent years.
She made her BDO Planet Championship debut back in 2010 supports a tournament comprising just seven players. However , the Women’s Models featured 82 entrants, with 13 nationalities represented.
Truly indicative of the sport’s growth combined with testament to Hedman’s class that your own woman was still able to advance, and she claims this progress will be accelerated for further investment and opportunity for currently the women’s game.
“You have Mikuru [Suzuki], Ayah and Fallon who have taken the hand to another level. You have another woman called Beau Greaves who In my view is going to be phenomenal.
“If the opportunity is there like the men’s in to PDC then I think you will see women game change again. The standard ıs going to be so high it’s unbelievable. It is here. Some of the ladies do have the game and it is like any sport. It’s whether you desperately want it. ”
‘The Heart of Darts’ is conscious of the demands of top-level athletic activity. Her brother Rudi was a professional person footballer who played for Amazingly Palace, whilst nephew Graham significant a 400-metre runner – was obviously a silver medallist at the 2006 Snow-boarding Athletics Championships.
Hedman is also not the only member of the actual family to possess darting pedigree. The actual brother Al was British Available champion in 1995 and she will become part of the first brother associated with sister combination to compete while in the PDC Worlds, after Al was seen as beaten by Bob Anderson contained in the 2003 edition.
Notwithstanding, whether she will do so in the environment of a crowd at Ally Pally remains to be seen, given the current uncertainty immediate the coronavirus pandemic.
Nobody would be more deserving of your rapturous reception than one of the sport’s all-time greats, but irrespective of the predicament, it will still be a moment to value.
