On the latest Transfer Talk Podcasting, Rory Smith insists Manchester United’s biggest problems are not to do with exchanges, despite signing just one player come july 1st.
Fans, pundits plus critics have been vocal in latest weeks with United trailing additional big-six sides in their summer investing, with Donny van de Beek the one and only arrival, and the Jadon Sancho saga still ongoing before the Oct 5 deadline.
Yet New York Times’ chief soccer reporter Smith says United’s spending more than previous years is being ignored, plus insists manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should not be immune from criticism, managing one of the world’s most expensive teams.

“I don’t think Stansted United’s problem is to do with transfers, to become perfectly honest. Gary Neville stated earlier this week that the board need to deliver players for Solskjaer.
“They’ve spent a fortune almost every year, and at some point, the particular flaws in the team have to be related to the coach. I’m not stating Solskjaer needs to be sacked, or that will he’s done a bad job, however the way football works is that the night clubs do their best to get you the players, and am don’t think anyone can seriously declare Manchester United have been stingy within the transfer market. They’ve got one of the most costly squads in world football.
“Ultimately it’s actual up to the coach to make the best of this, and I’m not sure Solskjaer could be immune from criticism forever, which the solution every single summer should be to invest £100m, £150m on players.
“That being said, I believe Donny van de Beek is an excellent signing and they may need one or two a lot more in the next couple of days, because otherwise, provided how compressed the schedule is season, they haven’t solved that will depth problem. So there is a genuine complaint there.
“But football is not just about signing gamers. There’s other stuff too, and we nearly forget that at times. ”
In spite of years of speculation over a sporting movie director appointment, and links with various names across Europe, United continue to be without a figure to oversee exchanges while embedding the top-to-bottom viewpoint of the club.
Jones believes the names they have been linked with more than recent years have been transfer specialists, yet believes they need someone with an extensive vision, not just someone to oversee discussions.
“They’ve promoted Matt Judge in to a similar role to a technical movie director in a sense that he oversees the move business, but I don’t think that may be necessarily the most important use of that placement.
“I think what you require in a sporting director role will be someone who has an overall vision for the actual club should be, this year, next year, 5 years or 10 years down the line.
“And I still do not get the impression that United have got zeroed in on that self-definition. I think that is the thing that retains them back.
“It’s interesting that whenever they are associated with sporting directors, they are deal manufacturers. Like Giuseppe Marotta at Inter, Fabio Paratici at Juventus.
“They’re not the people that oversee every aspect of a club, and be sure the philosophy is embedded bottom to top. They know how the market works, they have perhaps the contacts, they’re in with the proper agents and have the networks that will help. It’s all to do with transfers. inch
