Rory McIlroy is “100 per cent focused” upon landing his first win within almost a year this week and demands he is not playing the Zozo Championship just to tune his online game for the Masters.
McIlroy has not lifted any silverware because the HSBC Champions in early November this past year, and this week’s event represents their final chance to avoid going a year without a victory.
The 31-year-old began 2020 in excellent form and published top-five finishes in his first 4 starts before the coronavirus shutdown, considering that when he has rarely contended plus did not enjoy another top-10 outcome until the Tour Championship.
McIlroy followed up with a tie up for eighth at the US Open up, and he has been working hard on different technical aspects of his game within the hope of being back to his greatest before heading to Augusta, but this individual remains committed to ending his winless run at Sherwood Country Club within California this week.
“It’s four rounds, it’s an opportunity to earn a PGA Tour event, therefore that’s first and foremost what my concentrate is, ” said McIlroy, that has slipped from first to 5th in the world rankings since July.

“It’s been a year since We have won, I haven’t won given that China last year. So this week is an excellent opportunity to try to get a win and obtain into contention and I think that would be a large step if I were able to. I don’t have really been in contention much considering that coming back from the lockdown.
“If I could get into contention immediately and have a chance to win, I think that might be great for just overall confidence within play and all that. But certainly great looking ahead a couple weeks’ period and getting in a position where you’re needing to hit shots under the gun plus under that pressure of aiming to win a golf tournament.
“But for me, I’m one hundred per cent focused on this week and there is part of my mind that will be upon Augusta, Georgia, when I’m on the market playing those 72 holes recently. ”
With all the final major of the year pending, McIlroy could not avoid questions in the intended Masters preparations and self-confidence heading into the only major that has evaded him, and he believes a clear , crisp short-game and experience of tackling Augusta 11 times will be of massive benefit next month.
“You need all aspects of your game who is fit, especially your short game, inch said McIlroy, who is using three-time champion Phil Mickelson as motivation for Masters success. “One from the conversations I remember having with Phil back in the day was he consistently tried to get his short online game so good at Augusta.
“Then he could be ultra-aggressive with all the second shots knowing that he had a brief game to bail him out there if he did miss this on the wrong side. So you attempt to get your short game really razor-sharp and get everything else sort of following that will.
“And in case you go back to a course every year, there are simply no real surprises. You’ve probably missed this in similar spots before, do you know what it does. There are certain things you remember, such as the putt up the 14th green, such as that’s the slowest putt on the training course and if you have that putt, a person remember it.
“I think it’s just all these small things that it’s just experience, I believe that’s it. I don’t think really anything like there’s more understanding, it’s just being in that circumstance a few more times than guys that will haven’t been there that much plus being comfortable and having assurance of knowing what this certain photo or this certain putt can do. ”
