Phil Mickelson is looking to use his most recent PGA Tour Championship victory like a momentum builder for The Masters.

The 50-year-old ramped up their preparation for the final major from the year by claiming a three-stroke victory at the Dominion Energy Charitable organization Classic, his second win within as many starts on the PGA Trip Champions.
Mickelson carded a seven-under 65 on the last day in Virginia to pull free from fellow former Masters winner Paul Weir, with the five-time major champion’s latest success seeing him turn out to be just the fourth player to earn his first two PGA Trip Champions events.

“It’s enjoyable for me to come out here and enjoy well and this is a good start for me personally as I try to build a little bit of energy heading to Augusta in about a 30 days, ” Mickelson said.
“I put a new driver in to play this week, trying to get a little more place, a little more carry. It was a little extravagant at times, but it was also effective within allowing me to play this course the way in which I wanted to, which was aggressively.

“It certainly is pressure for me since the expectation is to win. If I earn, well, I’m supposed to, and if I actually don’t, oh, my goodness, so what happened. So certainly there’s pressure, yet it’s more self-imposed and I wish to play well.
“I’m appreciative of the opportunity to play with this event and to compete with these guys and also to use this as a momentum builder when i head into Augusta; find out things I have to work on and be appreciative of the stuff I’m doing well. ”

Mickelson can return to the PGA Tour in the Zozo Championship, where Tiger Woods earnings as defending champion, before choosing to play the Houston Open — rather than the PGA Tour Champions’ period finale – the week prior to the Masters.
“I nevertheless get a lot of fulfilment when I am able to compete on the regular tour, inch Mickelson added. “It’s been annually and a half since I’ve won within the regular tour. In Memphis I actually finished second and I love that will feeling of having a chance.
“I’m hopeful that this tour, this particular tournament will help give me a little bit of energy. I’m going to go back to L. A. plus play at Sherwood next week trying to compete against those guys. It will not be easy, but I’m going to try it out and I’m going in with a little bit of self-confidence now. ”
