Peter Wright has never earned the World Grand Prix, losing within the final to Michael van Gerwen two years ago but Wayne Mardle thinks he has a run within him

That is an unique tournament that throws upward proven winners and surprise finalists – but what’s in store with this year’s World Grand Prix? David Mardle delivers his verdict.

What I find fascinating relating to this event is that we all think that the double start event caters for great double hitters and it should do.

But if you look throughout the years and the players that have actually come to the fore they are generally known as scorers. Adrian Lewis’ first huge major final was the Grand Tarifs, Michael van Gerwen won their first in 2012, Dave Chisnall offers twice reached the final.

I think it’s fascinating that indeed you have to hit doubles, of course one does, but if you get away and then rating big, you can win any video game.

You need that bit of luck but also it’s all about time we always say that but I actually do believe – and to nick the Dave Clark-ism – the lotion does rise to the top in this event.

MVG has won five periods in eight years, Phil Taylor swift was relentless eventhough there was some lapses in there – it’s regarding getting away in your first or even second visit, you can’t keep obtaining away third because you’ll result in behind and being under pressure constantly.

Phil lost within the first round five times when he or she was an absolute winning machine, that is incredible and it means opportunity comes up.

Look at the list of runner-ups, and no disrespect to any of these gamers but the likes of Brendan Dolan, Shayne Burgess did it twice as nicely – some of the names you think exactly where did that come from.

No one can be under pressure for an entire week.

The Final 4

Last year there were just two 90 averages in the very first round and it tells you a lot of things. I have said this before it’s a tempo ruiner. It’s best of three models – a horrendous format.

Nathan Aspinall enjoyed an impressive debut last year plus there could be more of the same for the Leading League semi-finalist

Nathan Aspinall enjoyed an impressive debut last year plus there could be more of the same for the Leading League semi-finalist

Nathan Aspinall enjoyed an impressive debut last year plus there could be more of the same for the Leading League semi-finalist

I’m expecting some really unquiet games and I’m expecting several underwhelming performances but people that arrive through them are going to think ‘I’m glad I got rid of that one’ and then they can get into their grooved.

There were two shows last year and I think that will stand all of them both in good stead for this calendar year – two debutants Glen Durrant and Nathan Aspinall, so I am looking at the normal protagonists

If Michael van Gerwen eliminates Ratajski, he has got to look at their draw and no disrespect to anybody, I think that half then will get easier

I’m going regarding Michael to be beat Ratajski plus win that section of the very best – I just have to I think he or she comes through. So in bottom part half of the top half his semi-final will be Gary Anderson.

I really like what I’ve seen, he is not overplaying himself, he’s not really playing too much, he’s relaxed and am get the feeling that Gary is actually just relaxed in life and he is not as angry as it used to be.

Contrary to popular belief, Gary is an terrible loser, a terrible loser, but I believe even that’s kind of on the dwindle a bit now which tells me that will maybe he doesn’t put an excessive amount of pressure on himself.

Not even in my equations is Erina Smith. I don’t think he’s going to earn this event and that’s the first time since 2005! I’m dropping him but simply for this event.

Every time I realize Peter Wright in the draw right now he is the one for me and every period he gets beat I’m permanently surprised.

So Philip Wright to win his portion of the draw and I’m going with regard to Nathan Aspinall to play the way he or she did last year but come to the semi-finals – I really like the way in which he plays with such independence.

World Fantastic Prix – Wednesday’s first circular matches

Daryl Gurney vs Joe Cullen

And the winner is…..

From there, MVG performs Wright in the final and it will become a brilliant final.

Michael van Gerwen is going to be looking to defend his title, plus bounce back to form

Michael van Gerwen will be looking to protect his title, and bounce back in order to form

Michael van Gerwen will be looking to defend his name, and bounce back to form

A couple of years ago in the last of this tournament in Dublin, Wright had Michael on toast, I had been in the commentary booth and they experienced played five sets and Philip lost the fifth set.

I said: ‘That’s this, he’s blown his chance’.

Michael was terrible just for five sets and he was nevertheless in the game and sure enough that was this. But I just don’t see Wright as that player anymore, this individual won’t let him off, he simply won’t – I’m saying this like it’s a done deal.

I think it would be a brilliant last and I see Peter beating Eileen via double 10 – he could start double 10 and then he could finish on double 10, it can just bounce in like it do in the in the World Championship final.
