The BBC’s weekly The Boss series users different business leaders from all over the world. This week we speak to Romi Savova, founder and chief executive of monthly pension firm PensionBee.
Right after working in the financial industry designed for six years, Romi Savova states that she thought that transferring every her pensions to one provider will be easy.
At the time, within 2014, she was leaving the girl job at the London office people investment bank giant Morgan Stanley to join a tech company. Yet she very quickly realised her presumption about moving her pension had been wrong.
“I known as financial advisors [for help], whom didn’t call me back for 3 years, ” she says. “Because I wasn’t an attractive customer.
“I had a meaningful monthly pension, but it wasn’t worth hundreds of thousands associated with pounds, like some of their clients. inch
When she do find a new pension provider, the lady says the process of switching was challenging, “with 20 pages of information to check on through”, and all sorts of fees tossed at her.
“I thought – if I work in financing all my working life, what should it be like for people who don’t? inch
With that in mind, Romi noticed that she had an idea to get a new business – an online and app-based pension firm that allowed individuals to quickly and simply consolidate all their pension check pots in one place.
“I started talking to everyone I realize, to see what story they had regarding pensions, ” says Romi, thirty-five. “Everyone had one or more pensions they knew very little about, wished that they had online access to, and wanted to understand they were getting good value. ”
So taking a leap associated with faith, in 2014 she started work on creating PensionBee with the girl friend Jonathan Lister Parsons. He or she ran a small tech business, and they also had met at a start-up social networking event in London.
Protecting £1m in funding from traders, both quit their jobs within 2015, and they launched the business annually later. Romi took the chief professional role, while Jonathan remains the main technology officer.
Nowadays more than £1bn is invested in pensions through PensionBee, and it has 100, 000 energetic users. It makes its money simply by charging an annual fee.
Looking back, Romi says how the first few years of the business might be “challenging”.
“When you begin a business from scratch there are long, sleep deprived nights, and adrenaline-fuelled days to need to be doing anything, and every thing, and there’s no-one else to assist you. ”
The London-based business quickly grew though, assisted by growing awareness in the UK from the importance of pensions. This came since the UNITED KINGDOM government increased the age at which individuals get the state pension , with the same time introduced auto-enrolment, whereby firms need to set up pensions for their staff .
To help fuel the growth, PensionBee has now received greater than £28m in total funding from investment decision firms. It offers its customers monthly pension funds managed by industry giants such as BlackRock, HSBC and Lawful & General.
Competitors offering a similar service to PensionBee include Moneybox, Smart Pensions plus Penfold.
Romi, who was born in Romania, then raised in South Africa, says that will everyone should “put as much aside as they can afford” towards their particular pension.
Laura Produces, editor of Pensions Age journal, says that PensionBee has shaken up the sector.
“It is a young company within an older industry, being a leading example of the way the sector can modernise the way this serves its clients, through the use of technologies, and the focus on ease of user encounter. ”
Romi states that unlike many companies plus sectors of the economy, PensionBee has exploded strongly during the continuing coronavirus outbreak. The number of new customers joining in the 3 months from March was said to be 37% higher than in the previous quarter.
“Everyone was doing some level of reorganisation, whether that was for their house or even admin, ” says Romi, that went to university in the US.
The company now has 102 workers, and while it may sound corny, Romi insists that “one of our exclusive values is love”.
So how does the company show appreciate? “I really wanted to create a location where people can be themselves, what ever their gender, ethnicity or intimate orientation, ” she says.
“In big companies you need to hide who you are. [And] we have equal parental leave just for mums and dads, with 6 months fully paid leave. ”
The company is also due to expose a new fund that does not include any kind of investment in fossil fuel companies. Romi says this is in response to the particular requests of some customers.

Looking ahead, the girl says that the focus of the company will remain the UK. “We always keep abroad in review, but in reality there are numerous people in the UK who we have not reached and need helping. inch
But being therefore engulfed in the world of pensions, does Romi – a mum of 2 young children – ever think about her very own eventual retirement?
“I can’t see myself not working, inch she says. “I’ve definitely attempted holidaying, and I can make it through a 7 days, but at that point I really miss details.
“I don’t know however what my retirement will look like. We don’t think it works the same for everyone. I actually look at my parents, and my dad is within his late 60s, and he continues to be working. ”
